Stephen Colbert in the Zeitgeist for May 7, 2007

I hope everyone is enjoying their Monday. Here’s a snapshot of the Cobert-centric Zeitgeist for May 7, 2007,

Well, Jon may do the NYT Crossword Puzzle…
… oops, this could be a spoiler for those who do the puzzle ‘in syndication’!

  • SATURDAY, May 5, 2007 – David QuarfootRex Parker Does the NYT Crossword Puzzle: “This puzzle sparkles from the first clue, with STEPHEN COLBERT (1A: With 8-Across, comic named one of Time’s “100 most influential people” in 2006) looking very fair and balanced at the top of the grid (seven letters on the Left, seven letters on the Right).”

Video of Stephen Colbert on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’
It’s just a clip but I was happy to find it. I had heard he was on that show but had never seen it until now! From BlogCavenger

For all you fans of bookstore author readings
Just a couple of paragraphs from an essay about book signings – and they just happen to mention Stephen Colbert.

  • book touristJared Roosevelt Review: “It’s pretty clear that from an evolutionary perspective, people were never intended to leave the house. Especially not to go hear writers flogging their new books. Turn on the TV, forgodssake! Even my hero Stephen Colbert hosts writers on book tours. There’s just no need to witness a book tour first hand, without the considerable safety offered by the MUTE button. …

It’d be better to flog that book on the Colbert Report than to loiter in the DFW Hudson’s on a Wednesday night when thunderstorms are threatening to send everyone scurrying for rooms at the DFW Hyatt (or the DFW Day’s Inn, for the less fortunate). Even if Stephen was getting snarky at your expense, you’d be better off. Much better off.”

Hulk #106 has a new pop-culture reference!
Reed Richards has become a fan of The Colbert Report?

  • Book of Doom: Incredible Hulk #106Legion of Doom: Some quotes from the reviewers in this roundtable discussion:
    • “And Reed comes across like he’s still the jerkwad from Civil War. Apparently on that vacation with Sue he grew fond of the Colbert Report but didn’t learn that he shouldn’t be too trusting of Stark.” – Jean-Claude Van Doom
    • “The cutesy little pop-culture reference to the Colbert Report was enough to make me write this off entirely, but the sheer lack of anything even remotely entertaining or engaging is what really hit me the hardest.” – Doom DeLouise

As Stephen Colbert might say…

  • Other Tidbits From The Republican DebateEvolutionBlog: “Next came an amusing segment where the candidates were asked whether they felt the day that Roe v. Wade was overturned would be a good day in American history. Judging from the responses, it might as well have been Stephen Colbert asking, “Great day? Or, our greatest day?” ”
  • Tough questions for media, sportsChicago Tribune: “A couple of new studies about race and gender bias got me to thinking about an age-old question: Is it possible to think in a racist way without being consciously racist? How about sexist? Stephen Colbert indirectly raises such questions when he declares on his Comedy Central show “The Colbert Report,” beaming with irony, that “I don’t see race.” Unless you are pitifully tone-deaf to irony, you can easily tell that Colbert is putting us on with his flip certainty.”
  • Author drafts a novel case against BushBoston Globe: “The 1969 Needham High School graduate has already gained the dubious distinction of appearing on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report.” With his usual straight-faced sarcasm, Stephen Colbert referred to the novel as “just some fancy folderol candy floss for fun.” ”
  • La Campagne, C’est moiThe New York Times: “Ségolène Royal brought back the sizzle to socialism, raising the ire of Stephen Colbert’s right-wing TV host, who warned that “socialism is always a threat but never more so than when it looks like this.” ” [Editor's Note: This link requires a subscription. Gratuitous Name Dropping

  • Beehives and Buffalo Chips 505Daily Herald (Utah): “Buffalo Chip to the Utah County Republican Party for entertaining Don Larsen’s resolution calling illegal immigration part a plot by Satan to destroy America. While it’s not the first wacky resolution to ever come up at a party convention, it’s most likely the first — and hopefully last — one to invoke the Prince of Darkness. While enough convention delegates walked out of the hall to scuttle a vote on the issue, the damage was already done. The party made Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” ensuring national embarrassment, as well as validating Churchill’s quip that democracy was the worst form of government man had come up with.”
  • Spider-Man 3The Comic Book Bin: “The anticipation before the film was palpable, but was equally matched by the disappointment afterwards, which far surpassed the level of crankiness one might expect from keeping a theatre of comic book fans up far past the time they normally would have fallen asleep while giggling softly to The Colbert Report.”
  • Getting To The PointCosmic Watercooler: “One may point out that trying to get past a politician’s talking points has always been damn-near impossible, but the current political/media atmosphere has raised things to absurd levels. This absurdity is the wave The Colbert Report enjoys surfing.”
  • Vast Wasteland, RIP Multichannel News (Variety): “The digital recorder slurps up The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, CBS Sunday Morning, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and 24. That more than not satisfies me– until the evening news comes on. Which, by my definition, is 10 o’clock.”
  • Once essential, MTV no longer calls the cultural tuneBoston Globe: “Where is the new talent, where are the Mike Judges and Spike Jonzes, or even the new big shots like Johnny Knoxville? Why isn’t MTV snagging young Stephen Colberts?”

Thanks for posting the Stephen Colbert video from Curb Your Enthusiasm. He was a great guest star, as so many are in Curb. That scene was from the finale of season 4.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0
