ROCK ISLAND – U.S. Rep. Phil Hare, D-Rock Island, laughed instead of sweated his way through his most recent interrogation from a talk show host, one in which he was asked to take the pro-slavery side of a debate.

If that sounds strange, it should. Hare will be featured tonight on “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, with satirist Stephen Colbert.

Hare will appear on the show’s “Better Know a District” segment. The spots are known as much for ridiculing a district as skewering its representative.

“I think it would be much more difficult to have (“Meet the Press” host) Tim Russert grill me than Stephen Colbert,” Hare said. “I thought it was wonderful – he had me laughing so hard, I don’t know how he’s going to get a serious look on my face.”

. . .

Colbert, on the other hand, took the interview incredibly seriously, Hare said, breaking out of his character as a stone-faced pundit only once.

In that instance, Colbert asked whether Hare knew how poet Carl Sandburg, a native of Galesburg and the 17th Congressional District, had died. When Hare responded that he did not, the host suggested murder and asked whether Hare was going to do anything about the poet murderer on the loose in his district.

“That’s about as far as he could get before he started laughing,” Hare said. “It seemed like it was a little too much, even for him.”

Once again, I find myself praying that Comedy Central will see fit to release these outtakes and unused footage someday.
