Zeitgeist for March 1, 2007: Name Game Edition

Funny what you run across while looking for mentions of the name “Stephen Colbert” in the news and blogosphere – he’s multi talented and much busier than we thought!
Stephen Colbert is an assistant professor in plastic surgery, an Equity Research Analyst, and apparently he moonlights for Mozilla. Here’s the slow news day Zeitgeist for March 1, 2007

Name Calling
We heard the story before, but now they have even more names for us.

  • ‘Daily’s’ intellectual fuddie-duddies – Daily Bulletin (Ontario, CA): “Bill O’Reilly likes to call viewers of “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report” stoners and slackers. Here’s another name he can give them: readers (or, at least, patrons) of serious current-events literature.”

Name Dropping
Am I the only one who thinks it’s funny that even sports news drops the name ‘Colbert’ like a hot potato these these days?

  • Deadline’s gone; time to look at teams’ futures – Sporting News: ” In perhaps the day’s biggest deal, the Edmonton Oilers shipped heart-and-soul forward Ryan Smyth to the New York Islanders. In return, the Oilers received two good prospects, centers Ryan O’Marra and Robert Nilsson, and a 2007 first-round pick… O’Marra is perhaps the key player, although he has yet to turn pro. He plays for Stephen Colbert’s favorite hockey team, OHL Saginaw, and this should be his final season of junior hockey.”
  • Stephen Harper’s Jet Hypocrisy, Docks Gets Its Game Back, Stephen Hawking Goes Weightless – Torontoist: “The Raptors, despite being dead to Stephen Colbert, breezed to a 106-90 victory over the Houston Rockets last night. Take that Colbert!”

Naming Sources
Where some writers come clean about where they really get their stories…

  • A writer’s guide to life – Daily Aztec: “11:01 – 11:59 p.m.: “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” – how I brainstorm for opinion column ideas. Those writers get paid handsomely to be interesting. How are their brains not exploding?”
  • Colbert to Receive Award in Aspen – Comedy Central Insider: “Stephen Colbert (shown here at the NY Comic Con doing signage for a fanboy) is set to receive a Person of the Year Award at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen this Friday, March 2, 9pm at the St. Regis Aspen Ballroom. Of course, this information (courtesy of those tireless Sentinels of Stephen at the No Fact Zone) is moot unless you have filthy reserves of lucre and private airlift access to Colorado.”

Oh, did they mention little ol’ us?!?
