Six Degrees of Stephen Colbert: Rob Corddry talks about Stephen and The Daily Show

  • Daily ‘Winner’ – Backstage.com: “The Daily Show’s correspondents are known for their distinctive personas, but, Corddry says, he never fully thought about creating a character for the show. ‘[Helms and I] had the benefit of having Stephen Colbert there, who we could imitate, which is basically what we did until we found out what we thought was funny and what was the most fun way to interact with people we were interviewing,’ he says. ‘Where Colbert was the guy who thinks he’s really smart, my guy was a guy that had no problem being dumb and was maybe a little overly confident about that, which is not like me whatsoever. I’m dumb and I’m very insecure about it.’”
  • Rob Corddry on The Daily Show – CanMag: “Corddry guest hosted for a few nights when Jon Stewart was either sick or at the birth of a child, but there was never a plan for Corddry to take over. ‘It was a blast. I don’t think I couldn’t pull that off. It would be a completely different show, geared more towards poop than the middle east. But it’s not really my bag to tell you the truth. Those guys, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are lucky in that they have found relatively, I guess at the perfect time, exactly what they should be doing in life. The Daily Show wasn’t that exactly for me. I’ve never been sort of a political animal, although I became one while working there just by default.’”

Rep. Steve Cohen on BKAD set to air this week?

[Editor's note: I have not seen an official confirmation of this schedule information yet, so quote me at your peril.]

  • March 1, it’s ON, baby! – posted by LeftWingCracker: “No, not a basketball game, not a hockey game, not even American Idol.

    Steve Cohen.

    Stephen Colbert.

The meeting of the epoch on the Colbert Report this Thursday night, March 1st, on Comedy Central, which is Channel 38 on Comcast Digital Cable, at 10:30 P.M.

    BE THERE.”

One more amusing anecdote from the NYCC

  • New York Mo Fo City (Redux) – posted by iskew: “Best exchange… (* Note that Stephen Colbert went to Hampden Sydney for part of his undergrad)

DEAN (to Stephen Colbert): First off, let me be up front and apologize, I went to Randolph-Macon.
COLBERT: Don’t apologize, so did I!
    DEAN (Confused): Really?
    COLBERT: Sure, for the parties!”

Wikipedia debate

  • Wikipedia debate at Middlebury College – Liberal Education Today: “Middlebury College’s library hosted a debate about the Wikipedia and teaching between professors Amy Morsman and Jason Mittell.

Morsman began by showing a Stephen Colbert clip, then lauding Wikipedia as remarkable for technology, community facilitation, information development, and accessibiity.

    . . .

Jason Mittell began by pointing to the Wikiality site, a Stephen Colbert fan/parody site. He then explored the nature of the Wikipedia and objections to it.”

Bald eagle sighting . . . in “Russ Lieber” country

  • Madison Snaps — February 27, 2007 – Isthmus: “Today’s image is titled My Eagle Neighbor and was photographed by Karen Darcy.

    . . .

Hmm… a bald eagle living in the heart of east-side Madison, the home turf of his nemesis Russ Lieber. What might Stephen Colbert have to say about this?”

Shout outs, references, and gratuitous name dropping

  • United Nations Official to Speak at Duke March 1 – Duke University: “Durham, NC — Shashi Tharoor, the United Nations under-secretary-general for communications and public information, will discuss ‘Does the United Nations Have a Future?’ at Duke University on Thursday, March 1.

    . . .

‘As a person who not only has worked in international relations, but also has written scholarly books and articles on politics and foreign policy, Shashi Tharoor is extremely articulate about contemporary international issues, the work of the U.N. and the needs of the world,’ said Sanford Institute Director Bruce Kuniholm. ‘His recent appearance on Comedy Central’s ‘Colbert Report’ shows he also is open to new ideas. I expect his lecture will be enlightening.’”

  • The Lord (Black) Is Their ShepherdEditor & Publisher: “And it’s not just the fulsome, in the literal dictionary sense, praise — a wonderfully over-the-top William F. Buckley-esque romp through the thesaurus — that makes you suspect a Great White North incarnation of Stephen Colbert is at work.”
  • Academy Awards LXXIX: The Wrap-Up – BlogCritics.org: “Producers: seriously, no more tumblers, acrobats, shadow puppets, choirs, or anything that is not directly involved in propelling the evening forward. A lack of Celine Dion would not harm anything either. Also, consider a host who is not afraid of making people laugh. Perhaps if you book now, Stephen Colbert might be available.”
  • Copyright Confusion Ensnares Pelosi – NewTeeVee (Canada): “I’ve been a C-Span viewer since I was a teenager, and since there were no commercials and nothing but soporific policy discussion, I’d assumed it was all public domain. That is, until the company issued a DMCA takedown notice to YouTube after Stephen Colbert’s White House Press Corps Dinner appearance was a viral hit on the site last year. The deal is, all materials produced by the government are automatically in the public domain, but C-Span’s cameras are owned by the network and therefore their footage is copyright.”

Re Rep. Steve Cohen, y’all (he’s from Memphis) can read more about him in this post from a couple of weeks ago:

Thanks, WWG. I probably should have linked back to the original story when I saw that there was a tentative air date set. Sometimes, with all the formatting and linking, I overlook these little details.

[...] We previously reported here at the No Fact Zone that tonight (March 1st) was the unofficial air date for residents of Tennessee’s “Fightin’ Ninth” to see their Congressman, Steve Cohen, on The Colbert Report. It is now official; here’s the press release from Cohen’s website (complete with a helpful description of The Colbert Report and BKAD, for those coming a bit late to the party): CONGRESSMAN COHEN BECOMES “BETTER KNOWN” Washington, DC — Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9) will appear on The Colbert Report Thursday evening, March 1 at 10:30 p.m. Central Time on Comedy Central.
