Normally, I’d put an item like this in a zeitgeist post, but it’s been a slow couple of days and this made me smile. The Wisconsin State Journal has created a list of its seven favorite contemporary television couples. It includes such pairings as Jim and Pam (“The Office”), Luke and Lorelai (“Gilmore Girls”), J.D. and Turk (“Scrubs”) and, of course, Stephen Colbert and – who else? – himself. Hee!

Sure, he loves his audience, the heroes. And he loves his nation, to be sure. But the one person Stephen Colbert loves more than anything is himself. He is an endless self-promoter, giving himself constant pats on the back. Just take a look at that portrait, featuring a portrait of a portrait, that hangs above his fireplace. And his most formidable opponent, featured in the occasional debate segment, “Formidable Opponent”? Himself. Because nobody could best Stephen but Stephen.
