Holy crap, this is hot – French with Gravitas

By DB on February 3rd, 2007 ·

Ok, so like most of the Colbert fandom, I’m doing a final check and saving a few pirated yet amazingly entertaining YouTube videos onto my hard drive before they take them all away.

(By the way, I do not advocate piracy or any other illegal activity. I simply believe that finding hidden treasures on YouTube helps fuel the rabid passion many TDS/TCR fans have developed. My goal with posting YouTube videos is and always has been to simply educate and entertain Stephen Colbert fans, encouraging them to become more passionate, more loyal, more fanatical. The fans that are watching and forwarding and embedding YouTube videos are not criminals. They are not trying to steal money from Viacom. On the contrary, they are trying to foster their own rabid obsession in their friends, their family, their casual acquaintances, their cashier in the grocery line, anyone who is willing to listen. I can understand Viacom’s desire to protect their intellectual property, but on the other hand, having these videos on YouTube does not cost one red cent out of their pocket. These TDS/TCR videos (with maybe 2 hours worth of exceptions) are not available for purchase, and most are so old they’re not even available on Motherload. And many of us found a video on YouTube (“Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall! All you have to do is call!”) that we loved so much we went and bought the Indecision 2004 set. How many viewers, viewers who now watch ads every night on Comedy Central, first saw the show from a YouTube link? Would the WHCD ever have been as big of a news item without YouTube? That one event skyrocketed Colbert into the spotlight. So many videos have become “classics” that fans can consider shared experiences, videos such as Filliam H. Muffman, and the banana, and Temptation Pitch. I even got this blog’s name from a sketch that I saw not on TDS, but on YouTube (“It’s French, b!tch!”).But we never would have seen these videos if it were not for YouTube. Ah, well. What do I know? I’m just one of those horrible fans perusing illegal copyrighted information on YouTube. I’m so naughty.)

Anyway, so I found this bad boy. I’ve never seen it before, but it is truly a thing of beauty.

Download it. Then watch it. Then watch it again. I did. We’ll see how long this video lasts.

Holy crap. I never saw this because I was in Germany when it aired. I lived in France during the election…that was a strange time. I’m waiting for TDS to cover the current election.

Stephen did a remarkably good job, but he had a strange tendency to turn final e’s into a drawn-out syllable, or pronounce them when they’re not supposed to be pronounced. You do this while singing in French, and it’s a mark of a southern accent when spoken.

Also, the French script was hilariously wrong in parts, but I’ll continue geeking out on my own over here and not inflict it on you all.

A slight consolation prize for those who missed that: “The French Persistence” (a Stephen piece from TDS about an NC town that declared French Appreciation Month):

Oh goddamnit…. they already pulled it. They even got the Exit 57 stuff, this better mean it’s going to be released on DVD. I AM SO BITTER ABOUT THIS SECOND YOUTUBE PURGE.

I’ve seen it before(thankfully) but I can’t believe they’ve pulled it already! I only got about 3 clips from Exit 57 before those were wiped out too. Such a sad day – the second great purge is upon us :(
