Arkansans living in the “Fightin’ 2nd” will have a chance to see their congressman (and current Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel), Rep. Vic Snyder, sit down with Stephen on an upcoming installment of “Better Know a District.” Although it does not appear that the air date has been set, author and web-reporter Mara Leveritt recounts the following from a telephone interview she conducted with Snyder on January 29, 2007:
Synder, who is a physician and a former Marine, attempted unsuccessfully several times to overturn Arkansas’s sodomy law when he was a member of the state senate. He joked about that in a telephone interview today.
Snyder said he had recently taped a segment for the Colbert Report, that has not yet aired, on which host Stephen Colbert challenged: “So, you’re for sodomy!” Snyder said he responded, in effect, that the state could have saved the thousands of dollars in attorneys’ fees that were spent defending the law, which was finally struck down, if lawmakers had sided with him back then.
Snyder did not say whether Colbert addressed “don’t ask, don’t tell” in the Colbert interview. But he said, “I think polls are showing there is more openness in the military about gays and lesbians serving.”
We’ll let you know if we hear any more information about the segment; stay tuned!
