The Steagle has landed
TV host Colbert lifts the Spirit of OHL team and a struggling city, by Sunaya Sapurji
Feb 01, 2007 04:30 AMSAGINAW, Mich.–Steagle Colbeagle, like any good eagle, puts his plush yellow pants on one talon at a time.
It’s hockey night in Saginaw and the mini-mascot of the Ontario Hockey League’s Spirit is preparing to greet his fans.
It’s a big task for the cherubic 13-year-old inside the suit, a skinny 5-footer who says he has dropped 10 pounds since he began making frequent public appearances as the eagle.
“The actual suit itself ain’t that bad, it’s just the head – it gets really hot. They have a fan in there but it only works half the time.”
The boy – and the 12-year-old who shares the role – can’t be named because the team wants to preserve their anonymity.
Steagle is, after all, representing The Colbert Report, a hit Comedy Central news show spoof, and its brash, ultra-American, ultra-conservative host, Stephen Colbert.
“It’s really cool, I think Stephen Colbert is awesome,” says the 12-year-old Steagle.

Anyone heard from that editor of the local paper who thought Stephen was going to ruin the Spirit?

Good question, Jennie. (That would have been the piece Bill Cornish – the Saginaw News copy editor – ran last October called “Fake news pundit doesn’t help, could hurt Spirit”, since archived, in case anyone wants to know.) I ran a quick search for more recent articles, but I don’t have any results yet from that admittedly cursory check. If I have time later, maybe I can do some more digging.
If anyone else knows, though, feel free to shoot us a tip. Thanks!
