In the numbers game, both pundits win
ByThe ratings are being tallied, and it looks like “the greatest TV crossover since the Flintstones met the Jetsons” paid off for both participants. The LA Times has the most complete coverage, noting that “Colbert helped O’Reilly draw more than 2.9 million viewers, a boost of 46% over last quarter and a hike of 67% among 25- to 54-year-old viewers. With O’Reilly on his show, Colbert garnered 1.64 million viewers, up 50% over last quarter.” Those numbers differ slightly from the ones posted by Variety.com, who reports that The Colbert Report saw record high ratings of 1.7 million viewers (a 42% increase over the average) with last night’s show. TV Barn puts those numbers slightly lower (at 1.6 million viewers); regardless, it appears to be a healthy ratings bump.
The LA Times also shares some behind-the-scenes information, including the news that Stephen arrived at Fox News headquarters . . . before realizing that he’d forgotten his I.D.

“LA Times goes on to state that 70% of O’Reilly’s frequent nightly views fell asleep approximately two minutes into the eight o’clock broadcast. Many of them we’ve spoken to admit to later being awoken by the volume of the host’s voice and believed the “younger man” guest appearing on the show reminded them of their grandson.”
