Heads up, residents of Washington’s 3rd District (“The Fightin’ 3rd!”). I’m a day late with this news, but you’ll get a chance to “Better Know” Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA) when he appears on tomorrow night’s episode of The Colbert Report (airdate courtesy of this MySpace blogger).
Among Stephen’s questions to Rep. Baird: “Mount St. Helens — lava or leave it?”
Update:
Tacoma-based NewsTribune.com and ScrippsNews, also based in WA, have posted articles about Rep. Baird’s upcoming BKAD segment. Baird, who was crowned “Funniest Celebrity in Washington” in 2005, had this to say about his credentials as a humorist: “[B]eing the funniest man on Capitol Hill is a lot like being the best mountain climber in Nebraska. There’s not a lot of competition.”
Some observations on the interview: “Baird called Colbert an ‘insightful and gifted interview’ who can ask ‘ridiculous questions seriously.’ He said his strategy going into the interview was to play along, never be defensive and have a good time.”
And: “Colbert quickly took note of the fact Baird is one of three psychologists in Congress. ‘He cracked me up. He wanted to know how that made me feel,’ Baird said.”
Although Rep. Baird doesn’t know what footage will ultimately be shown, he reveals that the crew taped his impersonation of Pres. Bush.
“Colbert asked Baird to do his Bush impersonation and then asked whether he had a split personality. And whether it was Bush speaking or the congressman.
One of the few times Baird thought he scored was when he was doing his presidential impersonation and asked ‘Colbert, that’s a French name isn’t it?’ playing on Bush’s criticism of the French for not being supportive of the U.S. effort in Iraq.”
Welcome to the BKAD club, Congressman.
