Joe Quesada took the time to discuss his experience on The Colbert Report with Newsarama on Friday. Here’s a partial excerpt of the article:
NEW JOE FRIDAYS: WEEK 7
(Note: Published 7/28/2006)This week, while Joe Quesada and Newsarama both try to find our sea legs after last weekend’s Comic-Con, we talk about that show, all of Marvel’s San Diego announcements, and of course, that thing to your immediate right…
…
Jen Gruenwald, one of our editors in attendance, knew one of the staff members and he told her that last night’s crowd was one of the liveliest they’d ever had and that they were really happy about how it was turning out. All these things add up to great things for comics.
I did, however, screw up badly with one thing.
The week before we had asked Colbert if he would like to be rendered as a Marvel character. His response was the Hulk, so, I did a mock cover of Colbert as the Hulk stabbing a godless killing machine (bear) through the head with an American flag. Richard Isanove kicked major butt and digitally painted the thing and just made my mediocre pencils look outstanding.
The plan was to pull out this large blow up of the piece and present it to Colbert. I had it right by my feet but we got into such an exchange that no moment seemed appropriate to present it (I’m sooooo sorry Richard, I’m such a loser). I had so much more I wanted to say out comics in general but we were knee deep in Civil War. After the segment, both Colbert and I slapped our mutual foreheads because we never got to it, but the producers told us that actually it was better that we didn’t because it would have ruined the flow of what they thought turned out to be a very good interview. That made me feel great because ultimately this is about the people that do the show being happy with the outcome and the star of the show feeling like it worked well for him.
Besides, they used the piece as the graphic heading into commercial.

it's cool that quesada said that he chose to go on the report because it was one of the "most important" TV shows of today. while i'm usually watching for a good laugh or to see what's "on notice/dead" to stephen, its exciting to think that this show is changing political discourse as we know it! quesada shows great perspective for what cultural effect the Report has/is having/will have. I hope this means that stephen will continue to get geat guests in the future because it's a respected show, and not just a cult favorite.
Keep up the good work with the sight by the way!!
